When the pantry starts to fill-up with various odd and ends of crackers, cereal, raisins, etc., we like to dump it all together into a yummy snack mix. Sometimes, we even make it into a game - a little math with your snack!

Last night I experimented with making chocolate letters in the Letter Ice silicone molds. They turned out so cute! I just used milk chocolate chips, which I melted in the microwave. I filled the molds almost to the top, then topped them off with some festive sprinkles. I let them set-up in the fridge for 20 minutes or so, then easily popped them out of the molds.

Our advent calendar activity yesterday was making holiday playdough. We decided to try making gingerbread playdough. So easy and smells soooo good! :)

I had never tried making Rice Krispie Treats with any cereal other than Rice Krispies, even though the Confetti Squares on Martha Stewart's site had caught my eye many times. The girls were asking to make some treats the other day, and all we had were Cheerios and marshmallows. A yummy afternoon treat paired with some hot cocoa!

Okay, here it is! I've put together all the recipes, resources, tips, and tricks that all you generous people shared with me. I added in a few more book and internet resources, too. I already printed my copy and I'm ready to get cooking!

I must admit, we are in a serious vegetable rut around here. In general, my girls eat pretty well, lots of healthy stuff to balance out the goodies. However, one of my goals for our whole family is to increase our veggie consumption. Problem is, my girls aren't so into it...:)

One way I maintain my sanity during dinner prep is to keep little hands busy right beside me in the kitchen. We always have some great conversations while we're working together making food or tidying up. Here's a few of our favorite simple tasks in the kitchen:
Washing, drying, and tearing lettuce (the salad spinner is so fun!)
Cutting soft foods with a small knife or a plastic knife - try bananas, bread, peeled apple slices, or sticks of cheese.
Scooping from a large bowl into small bowls - try applesauce, cooked rice, cereal. If scooping with a spoon is too difficult for your child, offer a measuring cup or scoop.
Gathering items for a centerpiece; setting the table; making place cards
Pouring water from a small pitcher
Stirring; using egg beaters
Assembling a fruit salad
Sorting clean silverware back into the drawer
Gathering ingredients from the refrigerator or cabinets/pantry
Rinsing dishes and/or putting items in the dishwasher
How do you involve your little helpers in the kitchen?
{Side Note: Thank you for sharing your favorite fall books -- I added a few to my library hold list! Also, for those of you who asked about the bookshelf -- I am lucky enough that my hubby made it for me. I saw a sling-style standing bookshelf in a school supply catalog and wanted something similar to hang on the wall. It is basically two side boards with three cross boards, each one attached a little more forward than the one above it. The fabric is just draped and stapled in place. :) }

Happy Monday!

I have been wanting to join in with the fun Muffin Tin Mondays sponsored by Sycamore Stirrings. The girls love having meals in muffin tins, scone pans, and other divided dishes. This week's theme was Children's Literature -- I knew I couldn't pass it up! :)
We chose one of the girls' favorite books right now, Pinkalicious by Victoria & Elizabeth Kann.
We had a very pink afternoon snack when both girls got home from school:
Strawberry Delight Frosted Mini Wheats, bread with strawberry cream cheese, sliced plum, cranberry raspberry applesauce (by Mott's, no sugar added), strawberry marshmallows, slices of raspberry fruit leather, and strawberry milk.
I wanted there to be a few treats balanced with some "real" food, so this was a good compromise! The girls loved this, and we read Pinkalicious while snacking. We may have to choose more books and make this a Monday tradition!
If you have kiddos that enjoy this story, you can also check out the author's website for party ideas, games, printables, etc. Neat stuff!
And, of course, check out other fun Muffin Tin Meals based on children's books over at Sycamore Stirrings.
Happy playing and snacking!

I am happy to report that Natalie loved her first day of Kindergarten and excitedly went back for her second day today. Delaney and I aren't quite sure what to do with ourselves! We have a few weeks before preschool starts, so we can ease into this new schedule.
